Monkey Painter by Lucy Hogg 2022
Monkey Painter is a story I wrote over the first Covid year. I quit painting 15 years ago, and when people asked me why I said I could write a book about it.
I posted it daily on Instagram, scanning old slides of my work and writing as I went.
I spent the next year cleaning the text up and formatting it as a book. It was shown as a slide dissolve on a flat screen tv in a group show curated by Pan Wendt, RE:visiting, at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery, during the summer of 2022.
Art School by Lucy Hogg 2021
This project started about ten years ago, when I knew my Art School teaching days were numbered. As a photo essay, it is a wander through the studios at the Corcoran College of Art, American University, and University of Maryland, ranging from foundation classrooms to grad school studios. It includes an essay by Josh Shannon, my colleague from UMD, who teaches contemporary art history and has written extensively about the fate of art in the latter half of the 20th century.
Each image is in some ways a portrait of a student. The sets of relationships between the images constitute what could be a long teaching day, moving from one space to the next, adapting to the changing material circumstances and their suggestive possibilities.
The pdf represents a boxed portfolio (7" x 24") of thirty-six triptych prints on hahnemuhle photo rag paper, with texts and an index in a linen bound clamshell box. Art School's other manifestation is as a set of large banner prints, 24” x 99”, now rolled up in storage, to be exhibited some day…
